Lake Tanuki lies slightly hidden behind Mount Fuji, but if you visit the area around the mountain, be sure to visit the lake. You can get there by bus from the city of Fujinomiya, for example. I walked to Lake Tanuki from Shiraito Falls. The walk took me about an hour and a half and led through small villages and a section of forest. Be sure to stop for refreshments at Mame no ne.
Tanuki is famous for one thing in particular – early mornings. When there is no wind and the surface of the lake remains calm, the silhouette of Mount Fuji is reflected in it like a mirror. Local photographers call this phenomenon sakasa Fuji – “reversed Fuji.”
The best conditions are usually:
• in spring and autumn
• shortly after sunrise
• after a cold, windless night

The lake is surrounded by a well-maintained trail approximately 3.3 km long, ideal for:
• a peaceful walk
• running
• cycling
The trail alternates between forest and water, with several views of Mount Fuji. It is not difficult and can be managed even by families with children.
One of the reasons why Tanuki is so popular with the Japanese is the large campsite right by the lake. It is one of the best equipped in the area:
• space for tents and caravans
• showers and toilets
• fire pits and picnic areas
A night spent by the lake has a special charm – when the sky clears, Mount Fuji stands out even in the moonlight. In the morning, all you have to do is unzip your tent and the mountain is right in front of you. One advantage is that you can camp here all year round.
Tanuki is not a place for souvenirs or cafes with a view. And that is precisely its strength. Here you will meet:
• local fishermen
• runners from nearby villages
• families on weekend picnics
On the way back, you can treat yourself to ice cream at the Makaino farm.
