Okinawa is a stunning Japanese island that is definitely worth seeing in person. Although it lies outside of Japan’s main landmass, reaching it is quite simple, with flights to the capital, Naha, taking about two hours from Tokyo. If you’re fortunate enough to visit Okinawa, I highly recommend the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, which, while located on the opposite side of the island from Naha and the airport, is easily accessible by car in roughly two hours. The maximum speed limit on Okinawa is 80 km/h on highways and 60 km/h on other roads, but this speed restriction doesn’t detract from the journey, especially with the beautiful coastal views along the way. If you’re making your way to this side of the island, be sure to allocate some time to explore.
The aquarium itself is massive, and you’ll want to spend the entire day there, as its exhibits, including the impressive giant shark tank, are truly captivating. The complex is divided into several areas, featuring smaller tanks, a large central aquarium, turtle enclosures, a dolphin area, a shark exhibit, a historical section, and of course, essential restaurants and souvenir shops. Admission is 1880 yen for adults and 620 yen for children, with free entry for those under six.
