Mobile internet with eSIM when traveling to Japan

When planning a trip to Japan, having stable internet on your mobile phone is one of the most important things – and eSIM is currently the most convenient way to do this without a physical SIM card. Below you will find an overview of three popular eSIM providers. I have tried all three, and they all work very similarly and without any problems, even outside of large cities.
However, if you prefer a traditional data SIM card, this is certainly possible; you can purchase a card immediately upon arrival at the airport. You can choose cards for 3-4 days, 7 days, 15 days, or 30 days, always with some data limit, or possibly an unlimited limit.

Overview of three popular eSIM providers

1. Airalo – a proven choice for most travelers

Airalo eSIM is one of the best-known and most widely used eSIM platforms for traveling around the world, including Japan. It offers:

  • Data-only eSIM packages for Japan that can be purchased directly in the app
  • Flexible periods from 7 to 30 days and various data package sizes (e.g., 1GB, 3GB, 5GB to 20GB)
  • options to purchase regional, global, and local offers based on the length of your trip
  • easy installation directly on your phone without the need for a physical SIM card

Airalo is ideal if you want a fast and affordable solution that works well in cities and when traveling between regions.

2. Holafly – when you want unlimited data without any worries

Holafly eSIM is another popular eSIM service aimed primarily at travelers. With Holafly, you will often find:

  • unlimited data plans – great for longer stays or intensive internet use (e.g., for maps, streaming, or work)
  • immediate delivery and easy setup right after purchase
  • stable connection throughout your stay
  • simple data management and top-up process via the web or app
  • more days purchased = more discount

Holafly is more expensive than Airalo, but it offers peace of mind with its “all-you-can-use” option, which can pay off if you plan to be online often or are traveling in a group.

3. Revolut – eSIM as part of a useful app

Revolut eSIM is an interesting option because you get the eSIM directly in the Revolut app – a well-known fintech service that you may already use for money and travel expenses. With Revolut eSIM, you can:

  • set up and activate data directly in the Revolut app
  • choose from various data plans – for example, 1 GB for 7 days, 3 GB, 5 GB to 20 GB for 30 days
  • track your data usage and easily recharge your eSIM at any time
  • have everything (banking services + internet) in one place

Revolut eSIM can be particularly advantageous for travelers who want to manage everything from one app and don’t need ultra-high speeds or large data packages. If you also use Revolut for regular payments and collect Revpoints (recommended), you can use your collected Revpoints to purchase an eSIM.
